Levels, Rules, and Reporting

LEVELS
There are three levels of competition in this event.

  •    Youth (high school or younger)
  •    Intermediate
  •    Advanced

(The Intermediate and Advanced levels are self-selected.)

RULES
Any species on the official bird list of the California Bird Records Committee may be counted. This includes introduced species such as Chukar, Ring-necked Pheasant, Wild Turkey, Rock Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove,  European Starling, and House Sparrow. It does NOT include species such as Black Swan, Mute Swan, Egyptian Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, White-cheeked Pintail, Mandarin Duck, or Northern Bobwhite.  Birds located anywhere within the official boundaries of the Central Valley, (public or private property) may be counted.

REPORTING
Central Valley review species (marked with an asterisk) must be documented and turned in to the appropriate county sub-regional editor of Field Notes. (See below for contact information) The acceptability of questionable or rare species will be determined by consensus of sub-regional editors. Madera and Tulare County do not have sub-regional editors, so please send those records directly to the regional editors.

Please continue to post normal birding emails on the appropriate listserve for the county you are birding in. HOWEVER, PLEASE POST ALL RARITIES ON THE CVBIRDS LISTSERVE. If you do not have Internet access, make contact with a friend that does.
