Joseph Grinnell
Director UC Berkeley Museum of Vertebrate Zoology
Co-Author of The Distribution of the Birds of California

Joseph Grinnell was the preeminent ornithologist of California and was director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at University of California at Berkeley from 1908 - 1939. He gathered many bird specimens from Stanislaus County which were added to the Museum's collection. Using the data obtained from Stanislaus County by field ornithologists, including Joseph S. Dixon, Ralph E. Ellis, Jr., Alden H. Miller, Charles Sibley, Tracy I. Storer and Annie M. Alexander, he co-authored The Distribution of the Birds of California.

To read Joseph Grinnell's actual field notes from his work in Stanislaus County click on the Field Notes button below and advance to pages 3 - 22. (From MVZ Archival Field Notes) Grinnell was also accompanied by Tracy I. Storer and his field notes are linked below as well.
