Joseph
Grinnell was the preeminent ornithologist of
California and was director of the Museum of Vertebrate
Zoology at University of California at Berkeley from
1908 - 1939. He gathered many bird specimens from
Stanislaus County which were added to the Museum's
collection. Using the data obtained from Stanislaus
County by field ornithologists, including Joseph S.
Dixon, Ralph E. Ellis, Jr., Alden H. Miller, Charles
Sibley, Tracy I. Storer and Annie M. Alexander, he
co-authored The Distribution of the Birds of California.
