1. Hooked on birding:
Please describe:
a. How you became interested
in bird watching. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and
animals in the wild. Bird watching in particular I became
interested after I took the "Birds of a Feather" class
b. What you did to increase
your bird identification skills. Took your class.
c. Why you continue to enjoy
bird watching. There are always new adventures out there.
2. Field of Dreams:
a. Share one of your
memorable birding experiences in Stanislaus or Merced
County. Jo Anne and I were out on Cooperstown Road one
summer day when we spotted an immature golden eagle soaring
nearby. We got out of the car and it turned out there were 3
or 4 of them. They started to fly away and then they were
soaring directly overhead and so close we actually watched
the sans the binoculars. It was wonderful.
b. Identify a birding
location in Stanislaus or Merced County that you enjoy going
to and explain why you like to bird there. Turlock Lake
Campground. You can almost always find something at the
campground. I also identified my first bird (a black phoebe)
by myself there.
c. Identify a birding spot
outside of Stanislaus or Merced County that you enjoy going
to and explain why you like to bird there. At least
everyother year we go to Tule Lake, CA for the Thanksgiving
weekend to bird. We see ducks, geese, swans, hawks, owls,
eagles and usually lots of them. We are never disappointed.
3. A Few of My Favorite Things:
a. Pick 2 or 3 Stanislaus or
Merced County bird species and explain why you look forward
to seeing them. Sandhill Cranes always remind me winter is
coming and Western Kingbirds remind me summer is coming. My
favorite is the yellow headed blackbird and I can't tell you
why because I don't know.
b. What bird species that you
have not already seen in Stanislaus or Merced County would
you would like to find next? I would like to see a
McGillivray's Warbler.
c. What is your favorite bird
field guide that you take with you in the field (or have in
your car)? We have the National Geographic, the Sibley's and
Stokes.
d. What kind of equipment
(binoculars, telescopes, cameras, etc.) do you take along
with you while birding? An inexpensive pair of Bauch & Lomb
binoculars (12x50) and one of Audubon's telescopes.
4. Dear Abby:
a. What advice would you give
to a new bird watcher? Be patient and you can have some
wonderful experiences.
b. What suggestions would you
give to a parent to help them encourage their children to
become bird watchers? Alot of children learn from parents.
Make it a family fun time.
