Joseph Maillaird, (1857-1945)
President of Cooper Ornithological Club
Honorary Curator of Department of Ornithology, California Academy of Sciences
Fellow of American Ornithology Union

Probably the most significant contribution of Joseph Mailliard to the history of Stanislaus County Bird Records is the naming of the Modesto Song Sparrow after him; Melospiza melodia mailliardi. The holotype specimen was collected by Joseph and his brother John on the family ranch near Grayson, Rancho Dos Rios. He also contributed the only record for Brown Pelican (3 seen at his ranch). His records for Fulvous Whistling-Ducks on the ranch are also the only documented records for that species of duck which most certainly used to be found all along the valley wetlands and is now extirpated.
