Sun, Sept. 21 - Brewer's Sparrow. On Wilm's Rd. 2.9 miles north of the
Wilm's Rd./Cooperstown Rd. intersection. (HR)

Thursday, Sept. 25 An immature Peregrine Falcon was observed flying around
the Modesto Sewage Ponds. (HR)

Thursday, Sept. 25 A Marbled Godwit was seen at the Ceres Sewage Ponds. (HR)

Friday, Sept. 26 A juvenile Black Tern, Pacific Golden-Plover, Semipalmated
Plover and Pectoral Sandpiper were seen at the Modesto Sewage Ponds. (HR, JG)

Sunday, Sept. 28 Sandhill Cranes, American White Pelicans, Pacific
Golden-Plovers and Semipalmated Plovers were seen at the Modesto Sewage Ponds.

October 97 Stanislaus Audubon Bird Sightings

10/4/97 A Merlin was seen at the San Joaquin NWR. Please note that this area can only be visited with permission from the SJNWA.

10/18/97 and 10/21/97 10 to 12 Great-tailed Grackles were seen at
Modesto Creekside Golf course. Please check in at the pro shop before
wandering around. The birds have been hanging out at the ponds by the #1
Tee box and by the 18th green. (JG, BC)

November 97 Stanislaus Audubon Bird Sightings

Davis Rd. - Ferruginous Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Prairie Falcon, Golden Eagle,
Osprey

Lake Rd. - Partially albino Red-tailed Hawk, Sora, Sharp-shinned Hawk,
Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Osprey
Cooperstown Rd. - Vesper Sparrow, Ferruginous Hawk

Crabtree Rd. - Merlin, Ferruginous Hawk

Friday, November 28 - First ever county record of Red Phalarope. Two were seen
at the Modesto Sewage Ponds. Please be sure to sign in at the office before
going out on the ponds. The birds were at the southwest corner of the eastern
large holding pond(JG). They were refound on Saturday the 29th(HR). Also seen
was a Merlin in the same area(JG).

December 97 Stanislaus Audubon Bird Sightings

Friday, December 5th.
Modesto Sewage Ponds. 4 Horned Grebes, 1 1st winter Mew Gull, 2 PacificGolden-Plovers, many White-faced Ibis. (JG)

Del Puerto Canyon. All along the first 2 miles. Rough-winged Hawk,
Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, plus 4 other regular
raptors.

12/8 Modesto Sewage Ponds. 3 -1st winter Thayer's Gulls, 4 Horned Grebes

12/20/97 Turlock Lake 7 to 9 Horned Grebes, Turlock Lake inlet 65 Mountain Plovers,
Turlock Lake campground 8 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 3 Black-throated GrayWarblers, 1 Townsend's Warbler, 1 Hutton's Vireo and 1 Western Tanager.

1/17/98 - Crabtree Rd. just north of Warnerville Rd. 1 Lesser Yellowlegs
with a group of 20-30 Greater Yellowlegs in a flooded field. (JG, m.obs.)

1/21/98 - Mapes ranch 30 Black-bellied Plovers. (Victor Lyons USF&W, fide JG)

1/25/98- Del Puerto Canyon 2 Lewis's Woodpeckers at mile 9.3, 1 Greater
Roadrunner at mile 10.4, 1 Costa's Hummingbird at Frank Raines Park by the
softball field (JG and BC)

February 98 Stanislaus Audubon Bird Sightings

Bird sightings:

2/8/98 1 Adult Bald Eagle at the corner of Lake Rd. and Hawkins Rd. 3-4 Black-throated Gray Warblers, 16 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Hutton's Vireos
at the Turlock Lake Campground. 3 Vesper Sparrows on Warnerville Rd. near the
intersection with Wilms and Cooperstown Rds. 3 Prairie Falcons, 2
Ferruginous Hawks, 2 dark morph Rough-legged Hawks, and 1 very cooperative
Short-eared Owl (I shot about 40 photos within 25 feet) all along Wilms Rd.

2/17/98 A female Great-tailed Grackle was observed at the Modesto Creekside
Golfcourse. This is now 3 years running that Great-tailed Grackle have been
reported in Stanislaus County. This bird is either a very early migrant or
represents our first overwintering bird. (BC fide JG)

Saturday 2/21/98 During a very windy and rainy morning I had at least 8 immature
and 4 adult Bald Eagles as well as 1 immature Golden Eagle at Turlock Lake.

Sunday 2/22/98 Audubon outting to Merced Wildlife Refuge. 3 blue morph Ross's
geese and several Yellow-headed Blackbirds. We then went to visit Del Puerto
Canyon which is a mess. We had a female columbarius race Merlin at mile 1,
as well as a Ferruginous Hawk that had its meal stolen by a Golden Eagle. We
continued on to the Modesto Sewer Ponds and had either a 2nd or 3rd county
record of Surf Scoter. This was a 1st winter female with just a sprinkling of
white along the back of the neck. I counted 93 species by the end of the
trip.

March 98 Stanislaus Audubon Bird Sightings

Bird sightings:

3/1Modesto Sewage Ponds. The first Swainson’s Hawk of the season was
observed flying over the San Joaquin River. A rather high number of 5 Pacific
Golden-Plovers were seen in a large flock of Black-bellied Plovers. A flock of
about 20 Yellow-headed Blackbirds were seen flying over the sewage ponds.

3/7 — The first Pacific-slope Flycatcher of the season was observed along Dry
Creek just east of Claus Rd.

3/13 — The female Surf Scoter continues to be seen at the Modesto Sewage Ponds.

3/22 — A columbarius race of Merlin was seen at mile 3 in Del Puerto Canyon.
The year’s first Bullock’s Oriole and Blue Gray Gnatcatcher were also seen in
the canyon along with a Greater Roadrunner.

3/24 — On a drive from Turlock Lake to Wilms Rd., 2 - 3 Merlins, 2 Burrowing
Owls, Vesper Sparrows, and 2 Rough-legged Hawks were seen.

3/28 - Results of the field trip. Davis Rd. 1 Adult Golden Eagle, Merlin.
Turlock Lake Campground, Black-throated Gray Warbler, hundreds of American
Goldfinches. Hwy 132 Ferruginous Hawk. Wilms Rd. Rough-legged Hawk and
Burrowing Owl.

GNATCATCHER, YELLOW WARBLER, WILSON’S WARBLER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, GREEN
HERON, CANYON WREN, HAIRY WOODPECKER, CALIFORNIA THRASHER, COMMON MERGANSER,
LAZULI BUNTING, and LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH.


May 2, 1998 - Modesto Sewage Ponds. BLUE GROSBEAK, WILSON’S and RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE, WHITE-FACED IBIS, and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN.


May 2, 1998 - Modesto. WHITE-THROATED SWIFT, CHIPPING SPARROW, GREAT-TAILED
GRACKLE.


May 2, 1998 - East side of county. CANVASBACK, BUFFLEHEAD, OSPREY, BREWER'S
SPARROW, LESSER NIGHTHAWK, winnowing COMMON SNIPE, pumping AMERICAN BITTERN.

BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, RUDDY
TURNSTONE, BLACK TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, WHIMBREL, and

May 9, 1998 - Del Puerto Canyon. GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. (MF)

May 9, 1998 - Del Puerto Canyon. CANYON WREN, COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD,
RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW, WARBLING VIREO, YELLOW WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, GREEN HERON (nesting), OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN

TANAGER, and WILD TURKEY. (HR, TM, JG, many obs.)

May 12, 1998 - Riverbank Sewage Ponds. BLACK TERN. (MC)

Sat. May 16, 1998 - Del Puerto Canyon. OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER, GREEN HERON (on nest), SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. (JG)

Sat. May 16, 1998 - Modesto. 4 different drain holes were being used by
WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS where the Briggsmore overpass goes over the railroad
tracks. Also, a large, light bellied, notch-tailed, swallow-like bird was seen
briefly and not refound using the same type of drainage holes in the same area.

May 23-25, 1998 - Henry Coe State Park. Wild Turkeys, Greater Yellowlegs (2), lots of
Western Screech-Owls, Northern Pygmy-Owls (3), Common Poorwills (3), Hairy
Woodpeckers (2), Olive-sided Flycatchers (3), Western Wood-Pewees,
Pacific-slope Flycatchers (4), Cassin's Vireos (7), many Hutton's Vireos,
Warbling Vireo (1), Western Tanagers (2), lots of Sage Sparrows and Chipping
Sparrows, 2 Black-chinned Sparrows singing 50 yards south of Mustang Peak in
Santa Clara County (someday I'll get them in Stanislaus County), and lots of
Lazuli Buntings and Lawrence's Goldfinches. A total of 62 species. (JG, many
obs.)

5/31 - Del Puerto Canyon. BLUE GROSBEAK, WILLOW FLYCATCHER (JG, BC)

5/31/98 Briggsmore Overpass in Modesto - White-throated Swifts (9) were seen flying
around the railroad underpass.
