Sewage Ponds
Stanislaus County
Location/Directions
From Hwy 99, take the Mitchell Rd. exit and head
north. At the first light (Service Rd.), turn left (west) and go over the
freeway. Proceed past the stop sign at Central Ave. and the ponds are
located between the next road (Blaker Rd.) and the next stop sign (Morgan
Rd.). The entrance to the ponds is about 1/4 mile south of Service Rd on
Morgan Rd.
This facility is not as birder friendly as the
Modesto Sewage Ponds. If a large red flag is flying over the center of the
facility, don't go in. It means that the SWAT team is practicing (AK47s
and more). They have a shooting range right in the middle of the facility.
They are sometimes friendly and sometimes not. You are probably better off
trying to bird from the perimeter roads. Avoid driving down the canal that
borders the south end as farmers have been known to harass birders. (It is
posted no trespassing)
Habitats
Open water with usually exposed shoreline.
Birds
Good for waterfowl and shorebirds. Best spot in
Stanislaus County for Mew Gull in winter. Has had Tufted Duck.
